Derby Cathedral to Host Largest Fundraiser for First Steps ED with OperaBabes Concert

First Steps ED, a nationally recognised eating disorder charity based on Vernon Gate in Derby, is preparing for its biggest fundraising event yet. On Friday 19th June, Derby Cathedral will host a concert featuring the internationally acclaimed classical duo, the OperaBabes, as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations.

The event is anticipated to attract between 500 and 600 attendees, with all proceeds supporting the charity’s early intervention and specialist support services for individuals affected by eating disorders.

Karen England, one half of the OperaBabes and a Derby native, expressed a personal connection to the cause. Her daughter lives with an eating disorder, which has given Karen a direct insight into the critical need for accessible specialist care. She stated: “First Steps ED does extraordinary work. This is a cause very close to my heart and I’m proud that our anniversary tour can play a part in supporting it.”

Established in Derby in 2004, First Steps ED has expanded from a local initiative to a charity providing support nationwide. Eating disorders remain among the mental health conditions with the highest mortality rates, but timely intervention can be transformative and life-saving.

Daniel Magson, CEO of First Steps ED, highlighted the significance of the event: “We are absolutely thrilled to be staging what will be the largest fundraising event in our charity’s history. The OperaBabes bring real prestige to this occasion, and every ticket sold, every partnership secured, will directly help us support more people with eating disorders.”

The concert will feature a diverse programme of performances, including a professional string quartet led by internationally recognised violinist Dora Chatzigeorgiou, the mixed-voice choir A Choir’d Taste, the Dalesmen Male Voice Choir, the OperaBabes’ daughters, and a special choir from The Ecclesbourne School in Derby, attended by Karen England. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Alexander Binns, Director of Music at Derby Cathedral, with Paul Marshall serving as the concert’s musical director.

Tickets for the event are currently available, with all funds raised going directly to First Steps ED. Interested individuals can purchase tickets via Eventbrite for the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone – OperaBabes Charity Concert’ scheduled from 7:30 pm to 9:45 pm on 19th June.
