Southgate Global Launches Innovation Lab in Staffordshire with £250,000 Investment

Southgate Global has inaugurated its first Innovation Lab in the UK, situated in Hixon, Staffordshire, marking a £250,000 investment aimed at boosting the regional economy. The facility is located eight miles east of Stafford, close to the UK’s logistics hub, following a six-month search for the ideal site.

The Innovation Lab is staffed initially by nine Southgate specialists and is designed to assist logistics, fulfilment, and manufacturing companies in addressing operational challenges, testing new concepts, and accelerating the creation of practical workplace solutions. It consolidates product development, fabrication, and testing under one roof, enhancing Southgate’s capacity to design and refine equipment that increases productivity, lowers operational costs, and promotes safer and more sustainable working practices.

This new site represents Southgate’s first in-house capability for small-batch and prototype manufacturing. The investment focuses on product development, prototyping, and operational innovation within the local area, reflecting the company’s dedication to supporting customers amid the complex challenges faced by modern operations.

The West Midlands, recognised as the UK’s third largest manufacturing region with output significantly exceeding the national average, remains a strategic location for production hubs of leading businesses.

Gavin Rawson, Head of Logistics at Southgate, commented: “The Innovation Lab gives us the strategic location, space, tools and expertise to work even more closely with our customers to solve real operational challenges.”

He added, “Whether that’s improving productivity, enhancing ergonomics, reducing waste or supporting sustainability goals, the facility allows us to rapidly develop, test and refine solutions before they’re implemented in live operations.”

“Our customers don’t just need products; they need practical solutions that deliver measurable results. The Innovation Lab strengthens our ability to bring those solutions to life more quickly.”

The launch comes as UK businesses confront economic shifts, including rising employment costs, heightened customer expectations, and increasing demands for efficiency. Organisations are seeking smarter methods to optimise workflows, eliminate operational bottlenecks, and meet sustainability and ESG objectives through tailored equipment, consumables, and machinery.

The Innovation Lab offers a dedicated environment where ideas can swiftly progress from concept to reality. Customers collaborate directly with Southgate’s engineering and operational experts to explore challenges, assess potential solutions, and develop equipment customised to their specific needs.

Supporting the entire process from early-stage concepts and proof-of-concept designs to prototype development, small-batch manufacturing, and operational testing, the in-house facility enables shorter development cycles, faster innovation, and greater transparency throughout the design process.

Additionally, the Innovation Lab functions as a collaborative centre, facilitating idea exchange among Southgate teams, customers, and industry partners. It provides a platform to evaluate emerging technologies and explore new strategies for operational improvement. Southgate plans to expand customer engagement through demonstrations, workshops, and joint innovation projects focused on the future of logistics and fulfilment.

Southgate Global specialises in packaging equipment, consumables, servicing, and operational solutions tailored for logistics and fulfilment operations. By combining engineering expertise, sector knowledge, and a consultative approach, Southgate partners with organisations to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and optimise operational performance across their logistics and fulfilment activities.
