Prague Tops List of European Capitals for Family Bonding on City Breaks, Study Finds

A recent survey conducted by Icelandair, Iceland’s flagship airline, highlights that city breaks are becoming a key way for British families to strengthen their bonds. The study, which involved 3,000 UK participants, found that 58% of Brits feel more connected to their family when travelling together, despite a decline in quality family time at home.

Everyday family interactions such as reading to children, playing together, and having conversations have decreased significantly over the past six years—by 30%, 33%, and 22% respectively. In this context, one in five Brits (20%) identify city breaks as the holiday type that most effectively brings families closer.

To assist families in selecting the ideal destination, Icelandair analysed European capitals based on several criteria: the number of family-friendly activities, daily costs for a family of four, safety ratings, availability of public parks, and even the price of ice cream.

Prague Leads as the Best City for Family Bonding

Prague emerged as the top city with a family-bonding score of 55.40. The Czech capital offers 314 family-friendly activities, including attractions like Action Park and Signal Space, the city’s largest digital art gallery. At an average daily cost of £82.09 for a family of four, Prague is among the most affordable cities on the list. It also boasts a high safety score of 90.59, ample green spaces, and low-cost treats such as ice cream priced at £1.43, making it an excellent choice for families seeking to reconnect.

Rome and Lisbon Follow Closely

Rome secured second place with a family-bonding score of 54.60, largely due to its extensive offering of 782 family-friendly activities. The city’s historic landmarks and vibrant piazzas filled with pizza and gelato create natural opportunities for shared experiences. The daily cost for a family of four is £87.59, slightly higher than Prague, but Rome’s diverse attractions allow families to tailor their visit according to budget.

Lisbon ranks third with a score of 54.29. The Portuguese capital features 395 family-friendly activities and a compact, walkable centre that encourages shared exploration. At £75.99 per day, Lisbon is one of the more affordable options. It also offers a safety score of 67.60 and numerous public parks, making it suitable for families wanting a relaxed pace to reconnect.

Other Notable Capitals for Families

Paris ranks fourth with a family-bonding score of 52.90, combining 576 family-friendly activities with the highest number of public parks (536) among the cities analysed. While Disneyland Paris is a popular attraction, the Eiffel Tower receives higher TripAdvisor ratings (4.6 compared to 3.9), standing out as a key family destination. The city’s daily cost is £108.52, making it one of the more expensive options.

Bucharest and Luxembourg follow in fifth and sixth places, scoring 51.81 and 51.36 respectively. Bucharest offers a relaxed atmosphere with 60 public parks, including King Mihai I Park, providing ample space for families to enjoy quality time.

For families mindful of budget, Eastern and South-Eastern European capitals present affordable options. The five cheapest cities based on average daily spending for a family of four are:
