Durham City’s premier law firm, Swinburne Maddison LLP (Swinburne Maddison), has announced five new appointments to its corporate and commercial team, further solidifying its position after a tremendously successful financial year. The firm exceeded its revenue targets and is now focused on expansion, capitalizing on its recent achievements.

With the addition of these new hires, Swinburne Maddison boasts one of the largest corporate and commercial teams in the North East, comprising twelve fee-earning professionals. The team includes three partners, a legal director, two associate solicitors, three solicitors, two trainee solicitors, and a paralegal.

These strategic appointments were part of the firm’s development strategy, and their implementation has been made possible due to the continuous influx of high-quality and valuable instructions received by Swinburne Maddison.

Each of the five new lawyers brings unique skills to the corporate and commercial team. Matt Ray, formerly from the Teesside office of a national law firm, specializes in M&A and corporate reorganizations, particularly providing support in tax-led solvent reorganization work. Joining him is Jess Stevens, with six years of post-qualification experience in private client services. Stevens will offer advice to clients on share and asset sales, acquisitions, and management buy-outs, while also providing comprehensive transactional support.

Ashley Patterson, a recently qualified lawyer who trained with the firm, will provide transactional support to all partners in the team. Completing the lineup of recruits are Niamh Wilson and Brooke Jefferson, who have accepted training contracts in the corporate team.

Swinburne Maddison recently celebrated a record-breaking year for its corporate team, advising on 27 regional deals and ranking as the sixth most active advisor in the region according to Experian’s MA& North East database in 2022. The firm’s expertise also extended to national and international matters, including advising on Argenbright Holdings LLC’s investment in Amberstone Security Group Limited and the subsequent acquisition of The Protector Group Limited.

Additionally, the team facilitated Accel-KKR’s investment in Singletrack, a company supported by Swinburne Maddison since its inception, and Maven Capital’s investment in Pragmatic Semiconductor.

Looking ahead, Martyn Tennant, partner and head of the corporate and commercial team, expressed optimism, stating, “I believe the depth of resource in our corporate and commercial team now allows us to push our service offering to the next level. We are now able to field a corporate and commercial team that is comparable in size to those of any regional practice, meaning that more complex and labor-intensive engagements are firmly within the team’s capabilities.”

With these latest appointments, Swinburne Maddison’s headcount now stands at 79, solidifying its position as a leading law firm in the region.
