Welsh College Introduces Groundbreaking AI Pledge to Guide Ethical Technology Use in Education

A Welsh education provider has unveiled one of the country’s first artificial intelligence (AI) pledges, establishing a comprehensive framework to ensure the ethical, responsible, and inclusive application of AI in learning, training, and workplace environments.

The initiative aims to build trust among staff and students as AI technologies become increasingly integrated into daily activities, while emphasising the importance of human judgement, expertise, and interpersonal relationships in decision-making processes.

Developed within a broader digital innovation strategy, the pledge is intended as a best practice model that could be adopted by educational institutions across the UK, including schools, colleges, universities, and training organisations.

Structured around five fundamental principles, the pledge commits to enhancing human capabilities, promoting safe and ethical AI use, maintaining human oversight, improving accessibility and inclusivity, and supporting continuous skills development and understanding.

This approach reflects a sustained dedication to staff involvement and collaborative decision-making, ensuring employees actively participate in shaping how emerging technologies are implemented and utilised.

Nigel Holloway, Head of AI and Digital Innovation at Coleg Cambria, stated: “Artificial intelligence is already changing the way we learn, work and communicate, so it is important that organisations embrace these technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.”

He added, “The purpose of our AI Pledge is to provide reassurance and clarity. It reflects who we are as a college – innovative, ambitious and forward-thinking, but always people-focused.”

According to Nigel, AI is viewed as a tool to help staff and learners operate more efficiently, eliminate barriers, enhance accessibility, and free up time for more valuable tasks. “Whether that is supporting neurodiverse colleagues, helping learners revise more effectively or streamlining everyday tasks, the goal is always to enhance the experience of the people using it.”

The effects of AI are already apparent within the organisation. Staff have utilised AI-driven tools to analyse the tone of emails, summarise complex messages, and draft professional replies, reducing anxiety and saving considerable time.

Additionally, AI has been employed to condense lengthy reports and extract essential information from detailed documents, thereby increasing capacity for strategic planning, professional judgement, and direct learner support.

Learners have been introduced to platforms like NotebookLM, which convert revision materials into interactive study guides, podcasts, quizzes, and other resources tailored to diverse learning styles and accessibility requirements.

Caroline Street, Deputy Chief Executive for People Experience and Culture, commented: “As a people organisation, our priority is creating an environment where colleagues and learners can thrive.”

She further explained, “This pledge demonstrates our commitment to embracing innovation while remaining true to our values. We want people to feel confident using AI, understand how it can support them and know there will always be a human element at the heart of what we do.”

Caroline emphasised that by investing in skills, training, and ethical practices, the organisation is ensuring technology serves people, not the reverse.

The college believes the pledge will set clear standards for responsible AI adoption and foster innovation that improves learning outcomes, productivity, and wellbeing.
